ABOUT ALBINA ROADRUNNERS TRACK CLUB
Albina Roadrunners Track Club
We are a comprehensive track & field program here in Portland Oregon. Our club was founded over 53 years ago by Mr. Phil Walden, who quietly but effectively impacted the lives of thousands of youth from all over the city of Portland and outlining areas. His unwavering commitment and mentorship helped produce countless numbers of college graduates, coaches, professionals and community leaders. The Roadrunners strive to continue building on the foundation that he laid.
Today we are a proud USA Track and Field youth club team that prides itself on developing the talents of young athletes and encouraging them to do there best no matter the endeavor.

- How old does my child need to be? Many kids start at age five. However, Albina’s athlete development policy restricts us to a minimum age of 8.
- I don’t know anything about Track so how do I know my kid will like it? Track is a “No Cut” sport and has over 15 different events. Some events are not available to kids at younger ages. We believe that every child can find an event that they like and can develop in. Although it may take time, with our assistance and your encouragement we are confident that the right event(s) can be identified.
- Does my child need special shoes? Yes. Outside of the standard running shoe that most kids will come with, most kids will need a track spike or a thrower’s shoe. For spikes, it is recommended that most beginners get a track spike with a heel. The Foot Traffic store in Portland offers these shoes as do websites such as www.EastBay.com or www.EverythingTrackandField.com. If you have further questions getting the right shoe, just consult a coach.
- What is a track meet like? It can be overwhelming for both new parents and athletes. The early season meets are developmental, meaning that the intention of these meets are for the kids to learn and be reminded of track rules and protocols while getting a taste of what the later season meets might be like. Most importantly, it’s a chance for the coaches to monitor progress and steer the athlete towards an event, or events, that best fit them.
